Adhesive systems in Paediatric Dentistry. From smear layer to sealants.
This seminar will explore adhesive systems in the context of paediatric dentistry: from understanding the fundamentals of composite bonding through to the evidence base behind commonly used preventive and restorative treatments: what constitutes resin composites and how do they work? How long should you etch for? Should you use pumice before placing a sealant? How effective are universal bonding systems?
This seminar will seek to uncover the evidence and stimulate discussion around day to day techniques used in paediatric and operative dentistry.
Dr. Jilen Patel BDSc (Hons), DClinDent (Paed Dent), MRACDS, FADI, FICD is a specialist paediatric dentist who completed his postgraduate training at the University of Western Australia and 
Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. He is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Dentistry at the UWA Dental School and Consultant at Perth Children’s Hospital.
He is passionate about translational research and improving oral health outcomes among disadvantaged children. His interested in paediatrics and public health was sparked while volunteering for the Kimberley Dental Team and providing dental services to communities across remote WA. He was invited to be an inaugural board member for KDT and is now a director and Senior Dental Officer for KDT.
Dr Patel continues to play an active role in developing oral health policy and practice for underserved communities being involved with initiatives such as the WA State Oral Health Plan and WA Sustainable Health Review. He has published research in both local and international journals in the areas of dental public health, paediatric dentistry, cariology and Indigenous oral health. More recently, Dr Patel has been involved with creating an integrated, multidisciplinary oral health education and prevention program for refugee children. His work has led to the implementation of an Australian first double blind randomised controlled clinical trial aiming to arrest dental caries among refugee children using topical fluorides.
He was recently awarded the RACDS emerging lecturer award and has received fellowships to the Academy of Dentistry International and International College of Dentists.
Dr Amanda Phoon-Nguyen | Oral Medicine Specialist

This interactive seminar will present cases in paediatric oral medicine, with discussion on potentially life altering diagnoses such as paediatric cancer, orofacial pain conditions and systemic medical diseases.
Learning outcomes include understanding of some of these conditions, their oral manifestations and a brief overview of their management.
After attending this seminar, participants should be able to:
- Understand some of these conditions
- Explore the oral manifestations of these diseases in children
- Understand the management options for these conditions
Dr Amanda Phoon-Nguyen is an Oral Medicine Specialist.
She is editor of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) College News, holds Membership in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (General Stream) and serves as a mentor in the MRACDS program. In 2017, Amanda completed her Certificate of Advanced Dental Leadership.
Amanda holds positions on the ADA WA Dental Continuing Professional Development committee, the Western Australia regional committee for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, the UWA Dental School research committee, and is Treasurer and committee member of the WA local organizing committee of the International Association for Dental Research. In her spare time, she volunteers for the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation.
