Treatment planning considerations for the special needs patient

This presentation will firstly discuss the term ‘special needs’ and then go on to describe the scope of special needs dentistry. At the end of the session I hope to discuss considerations for patients with dementia, and those with an intellectual and physical disability.

Daniel Sundaresan

Daniel graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, passing the New Zealand Army Officer Selection Board the same year. He subsequently worked as a House Surgeon between the Oral Health Unit and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at Auckland District Health Board, before completing specialty training at The University of Melbourne, which included clinical placements at The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, The Alfred Hospital, and the Progressive Neurological Disease Service at Calvary Health Care Bethlehem. He has subsequently completed exams in special needs dentistry with The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons as well as The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

He currently works at Fiona Stanley Hospital as a specialist in special needs dentistry and has an appointment at The University of Western Australia as a Clinical Senior Lecturer responsible for the Special Needs curriculum for the Doctor of Dental Medicine.

Julie MacRae  |  Occupational Therapist

A practical approach to manual handling your non ambulatory patient, or the patient who needs assistance transferring into the dental chair.

Occasionally we treat patients who attend our surgery in a wheelchair, using a walking frame, or are aged or disabled.  We have not been trained to assist in the manual transfer of these patients into the dental chair.

This workshop will provide the participant with skills to apply in everyday life to avoid the risk of injury or harm.  It will also enable the participant understand the safe way to transfer a patient into the dental chair without risking injury to either the patient or the clinician.

Learning outcomes include:

Understanding current legislation.

Participating and understanding independent and assisted transfers:

  • sitting
  • standing
  • walking
  • repositioning in a chair
  • moving up/ down the chair when it is flat

Julie MacRae is an Occupational therapist who is a recognised trainer of manual handling in the broader medical field.  She runs her own business SafeActions which specialises in manual tasks consulting and training.
