This Lecture will provide information about the rational use of antibiotics as part of sole or adjunctive treatment in cases of periodontal disease. The proper time of antibiotic prescription will also be discussed. Types of antimicrobials currently used as an adjunctive management of periodontal conditions will be presented. Also the types of periodontitis that might be treated with adjunct systemic antibiotics will be discussed.
Diagnosis and management of acute periodontal conditions. Dr Julio Rincon | Perioodontist
This lecture will describe a definition and diagnosis for acute periodontal conditions. Key diagnostic criteria features will be discussed in terms of comparing and providing differential diagnosis for acute periodontal conditions and other similar dental diseases. Treatment options for each acute periodontal condition will be discussed and also the relevance of antimicrobial use and prescription for each condition.
After his undergraduate training A/Prof Rincon completed his postgraduate periodontal course in Periodontics in Colombia. Then he moved to Australia and completed a PhD in Queensland University. Dr. Rincon is Head of Periodontics Department at the School of Dentistry at the University of Western Australia and is in charge of both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Dr Siva Vasudavan is a graduate of the University of Western Australia (UWA), completing the five-year Bachelor of Dental Science degree at UWA’s School of Dentistry. Qualifying as a Specialist Orthodontist at the University of Sydney, he graduated with a Master of Dental Science (Orthodontics) degree. He graduated with a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Siva continues to contribute to academic endeavours in orthodontic education and research as an Adjunct Faculty Member of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Children’s Hospital Boston Department of Dentistry. Locally, he holds an adjunct appointment as a Senior Research Fellow at the UWA School of Primary, Aboriginal and Rural Health Care.
