Sleep and its disorders in children
Sleep problems are common in children. Poor sleep greatly impacts growth and development, behaviour, learning, social-emotional functioning, and quality of life. A range of sleep disorders can occur in children. The most common ones are sleep-disordered breathing and behavioural sleep problems. However, before understanding what constitutes a ‘problem’, it is essential to understand what constitutes normal sleep.
Bio:
Dr Mon Ohn – Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Physician. Mon completed her training at Westmead Children’s Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospital in NSW. She is a consultant and Raine Clinician Research Fellow at Perth Children’s Hospital and specialises in sleep studies, sleep-disordered breathing, behavioural sleep problems and sleep health in Aboriginal children.
Dr Chris Orloff | Orthodontist
Orthodontic considerations of sleep disordered breathing in the growing child
This presentation will discuss airway considerations in orthodontic treatment planning. Dr Orloff will apply the knowledge gained undertaking the Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine at UWA and discuss the impact of Sleep Disordered Breathing on the growing child.
Bio:
Dr Chris Orloff BDS (Lond), LDSRCS (Eng), MDSC (WA) Orth, MRACDS Orth, Grad Dip DSM (UWA) is a dental graduate of Kings College School of Medicine and Dentistry (1989) who moved to Australia in 1992. In 1999 he was awarded a Master of Science in Orthodontics at the University of Western Australia and later was conferred membership in the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons.
He established Class 1 Orthodontics in 1999 which has expanded to seven practices servicing rural and metropolitan communities. With the early adoption of digital technologies, his practices provide efficient and accurate individualised treatment for his patients.
He has held terms as State Treasurer and State President of the Australian Society of Orthodontists (WA Branch) and is currently a member of the Australian Dental Society and the American Association of Orthodontists.
He currently holds a position as Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology at the University of Western Australia. His current research projects include clinical investigations into the effects of Invisalign aligners and tele-dentistry.
Kelly Milner and Julia Dekenah| Speech Pathologists
Anterior swallow/ Tongue Thrust – a Speech Pathology perspective
This one hour presentation will provide a brief overview of the history of “anterior swallow” or “tongue thrust”. Ways in which this condition is diagnosed and managed from a speech therapy perspective will be discussed and current research into the area will be shared.
Bio:
Kelly Milner is a skilled, practicing speech and language pathologist with over 30 years’ experience and passion in supporting people of all ages overcome communication difficulties. Formal qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Hearing Therapy and a Master’s degree in General Linguistics- focusing on second language acquisition.
Julia Dekenah has 30+ years of experience working as a Speech Pathologist. After graduating from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Science degree in Logopaedics she worked in both the education and private sectors in South Africa. During this time she obtained her master’s degree in Clinical Linguistics through the University of Stellenbosch.
Julia now runs private practice north of the river and has done for the past 22 years. She splits her clinical time between an anterior swallow clinic and a paediatric clinic addressing the speech, language and literacy needs of her clients.
She is currently supervising Speech Pathology honours students at the Curtin School of AlliedHealth involved in anterior swallow research.
