The Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnoea – The Oral Health Practitioners Role.

With the prevalence of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea increasing in our population, more Dentists are now embarking in the management of this complex chronic condition. Consequently, an Oral Health Practitioners knowledge of snoring and sleep apnoea can only enhance their role in this management.
Dr Valerie Bennett graduated with honours as a dentist from the University of Western Australia in 1985. In 2014 she was one of the first graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine from the University of Adelaide and the University of Western Australia – the first program of its kind in the world.
She has membership in several organizations including the Australian Dental Association, Australasian Sleep Association and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and attends meetings annually both nationally and internationally.
Oral Cancer; Aetiology, Management and Implications for the Dental Professional.
Dr Nathan Vujcich | Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world, and it continues to represent a serious public health problem. Oral cancer is a preventable disease, related to behavioral and lifestyle factors, including tobacco and alcohol. Surgical treatment is the mainstay of therapy for patients with oral cancer, particularly in advanced stages of cancer.
An approach to the aetiology, management and implications that oral cancer has on the patient will be presented, as well as the role of the dental team in the management of this condition.
Nathan Vujcich
Dr Vujcich’s undergraduate Dental Degree (Honours) was from the University of Western Australia in 2001. He sat the RACDS primary examinations and was awarded the FG Christensen prize in 2001 before completing his Medical Degree (Honours) at UWA in 2008.
His medical internship was undertaken at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, followed by a medical residency at Royal Perth Hospital. His advanced training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery was primarily based in Western Australia but also at the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne.
During training, a short period was spent in the Maxillofacial unit in Zagreb, Croatia. Following completion of OMS training in 2012, a post training Fellowship was spent at the Royal Melbourne Hospital focusing primarily on orthognathic surgery.
Following this, a period was also spent in Bern Switzerland, focusing on implant based rehabilitation. He is currently in public and private practice.
Dr Vujcichs’ public duties include Royal Perth Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Aside from participating in the RACDS training program for OMS, he is the (WA) state councillor for the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
