Sleep-disordered breathing is gradually being recognized today as having significant health implications for individuals who are suffering from this condition and especially those who remain undiagnosed and may not be receiving the necessary treatment. This lecture will discuss the certain craniofacial morphological characteristics associated with this problem and will present the management of this patient.
Dr Sanj Kandasamy is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Saint Louis University in addition to Clinical Associate Professor at UWA. Dr Sanjivan Kandasamy completed his dental degree at UWA, his orthodontic training at the University of Melbourne followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Saint Louis University.
He is certified with the Australian Orthodontic Board. He is currently a reviewer for a number of peer reviewed journals and is the Associate Editor of the Australian Orthodontic Journal. He is on the Editorial Board of Seminars in Orthodontics.
He has also published numerous articles in the peer reviewed literature as well as three textbook chapters. He recently published the first ever textbook on TMD and Orthodontics.

Studies involving populations are challenging to conduct; however they can be instructive. Over the years, there have been a number of population studies in temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which have shaped our clinical practice today. Much of what we believed regarding the role of occlusion in temporomandibular disorders has been debunked. Currently there appears to be a focus on the biological, psychological and genetic risk determinants for temporomandibular disorders. This presentation will highlight the findings of population studies in the field of TMD and its applications in clinical practice.
Ramesh Balasubramaniam graduated with a BDSc from the University of Western Australia in 2000 and subsequently practiced general dentistry. In 2006, he completed a three year training programme and Master of Science degree in Orofacial Pain at the University of Kentucky, under the direction of Professor Jeffrey Okeson. While at the University of Kentucky, Ramesh also underwent training in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine under the direction of Professor Donald Falace. In addition, Ramesh completed specialist training in Oral Medicine as well as a fellowship in interdisciplinary Geriatrics at the University of Pennsylvania under the direction of Professor Martin Greenberg.
Ramesh has an appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Dentistry of the University of Western Australia. He also has public appointments at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Oral Health Centre of Western Australia and Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. His Oral Medicine Specialist practice focuses on Orofacial Pain, Oral Diseases and Disorders, and Dental Sleep Medicine.

Imaging younger patients and subsequent interpretation of these images can present a different set of challenges compared to their adult counterparts. The discussion will include common indications for prescription of imaging techniques including intraoral imaging, OPG, Cephs, CBCT, multislice CT and MRI.
Common radiologic findings on younger patients will be presented with emphasis placed on understanding the disease mechanism responsible for changes seen on the images. Key features leading to an appropriate diagnosis will be highlighted using multiple clinical cases.
Tom Huang graduated from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Dental Science. After working in both the private and public dental sectors, he undertook a three year specialist training program at the University of Queensland and graduated with a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry specialising in Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology. It included training at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, private radiology practices and at the School of Dentistry.
